The Inaugural Meeting
The inaugural meeting was held at the Mount Eliza Community Centre on Friday night, 13 February. Well over 100 people from the Mornington Peninsula and around Melbourne attended and were addressed by members of the Steering Committee and the high-profile panel of guest speakers, including Harry van Moorst (Western Region Environment Centre), Philip Sutton (Green Leap Strategic Institute) and Eric Bottomley (CERES Community Environment Park). They all addressed the parlous situation we are in as inhabitants of this planet and the urgency with which things need to change. Issues surrounding the establishment of, and vital role played by, centres such as the South Eastern Centre for Sustainability were canvassed.
Question time was mediated by Ian Morrison (Treasurer). Questions were raised by local residents about the likely impact of the Centre on local amenities and the issue of traffic volume on parking, which have since been formally resolved in the traffic engineers' report. There were many who voiced overwhelming support for the venture. Nevertheless, it was obvious from the discussion that more public consultation would be needed. As a result two targeted one-day workshops to further test and refine the scope of activities that emerged at the public meetings were held. Consequently, the proposed scope of activity which arose from discussions informed the building design and consolidated the support base from both private and public sectors for its establishment.
